At the General Membership Meeting on Monday, April 13, 2009, the Members passed the proposal of purchasing 100 more Flags for our Flag Exchange Program.
The United States Flag Exchange Day on June 28, 2008 went fairly well considering our informational ad was run for only one day in the Sunday June 22, 2008 Plymouth Observer. It did not appear in the Canton Observer nor was it able to be shown on the community boards for Plymouth and Canton by Comcast Cable. I would like to thank those workers who helped today during the 6 hour event. Don Dignan, Jim Hodgson, Doug Fox, Gary Kubik, Ron King. Gary Boucher was there with Product sales and special customers Ron Dillingham, Jerry Thomason and Judy Thomason providing moral support.
The Flag Exchange was very successful. All of the flags are now gone. There is talk about doing this program again at a future date. Here is some information found on the identified website listed: Identified Website http://www.ushistory.org/BETSY/flagetiq.html
NOTE: Flags that are not made of cloth or felt are no longer allowed to be burned due to the material being identified as hazardous to individuals and the environment. Initially those flags were required to be buried but there is a recycle program available where 100% of the material can be recycled and used to produce new flags.
What I should do with my old flag?

Bob Dew Chairs our Chapter 528 Travel Site. The site covers: Flights, Cars, Hotels, Cruises, and various Vacations. Check out VVA Chapter 528 Travel Site. For more information concerning our Travel Site, check out our newest web site Chapter 528 Travel Site

If you are familiar with booking travel online, you
shouldn't have any trouble navigating the new website. The site functions in a similar manner to
other travel websites such as Expedia and Orbitz. Some of the key features you will find on the
website include:
Courtesy of Treasurer, and VVA Travel Site Coordinator, Bob Dew: Dear Fellow VVA Chapter 528 Supporters, I want to thank you for your passion for Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 528. Over the years you've supported VVA Chapter 528 with your voice, your energy and your dollars. Now, we're proud to say, it's time to give you something back! Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 528 has a new membership service that actually puts the "fun" in fundraising and it won't cost you a penny. I know you've heard that one before. But, this time it's true! Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 528 now has its own travel website at www.travelvva528.com! This new service is like having our own Expedia@ just for VVA Chapter 528 supporters and friends! Everything you need is right here. You get access to the same airlines, hotels and rental car companies, cruises and vacation packages you find on all the other major travel websites, and, best of all - you get some of the lowest travel prices on the internet! Getting great travel prices for you is fantastic, right? But, how is this going to help raise funds for VVA Chapter 528?
Here's How it Works: If you don't know, every time you use a travel website like Expedia@, the travel companies pay BIG commissions for your reservation. Well, now when you book travel on our website, Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 528 will get a whopping 40 percent of those commissions! Any way you look at it, this is a win-win situation. You get great travel rates and you help funnel dollars from the travel companies into Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 528 to advance our cause. With your help and other VVA Chapter 528 supporters like you, we can raise thousands of dollars for Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 528 to help support our cause! I know you might have a slight case of "cabin fever," as a result, you are in the middle of planning a winter vacation or maybe looking ahead to plan travel for the Spring. Why not take the travel website for a "test drive" right now? I'm sure you'll like what you find and it would be a great way for us to kick off this new service. Try out our new website at: www.travelvva528.com. Use our new travel website and while you are flying to some exotic locale, you'll know you are supporting Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 528! It's that simple! Oh, and one more thing, please bookmark our new website. That way you'll be able to use it anytime you need travel.
Thanks for your commitment to Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 528 and for trying out our travel service at www.travelvva528.com.

The following is from the Observor & Eccentric Mirror Hometown Life Newspaper: Plymouth/Canton Chapter 528, Vietnam Veterans of America and CRUZ'N 528 are bringing back the annual CRUZ'N 528 Car Shows, a series of weekly events held May 20 through Sept. 2 at the VFW Post 6695 in Plymouth. "Welcome Back Night" takes place Wednesday, May 20, with car enthusiasts showing off classic cars and enjoying food and cold drinks. The weekly events feature a new theme each week, door prizes and giveaways, "Participation Plaques," and a 50/50 raffle. The weekly shows run 5-8 p.m.; the VFW Post 6695 is located at 1426 S. Mill in Plymouth. Last year's season averaged 70 crusiers each Wednesday, with a high of 125. One highlight was an appearance by the "Monkee Mobile," owned by Mel Guthrie of Guthrie Lumber in Livonia. Since CRUZ'N 528 started in 2004, organizers have distributed $14,760 to needy veterans organizations such as the VA Hospital in Ann Arbor and the Ambulatory Burn Center for the Intrepid, San Antonio, and purchased tickets for World War II veterans to visit the WW II Memorial in Washington. In 2008, after paying all the bills, the profit from the cruise (some $3,400) was used to purchase, pack and mail 92 packages with special need items to the troops in Iraq. "This year we will use the profits to support local veterans who need help to pay bills, house maintenance (inside or outside), prescriptions and other items," said Bob Paul of the CRUZ'N 528 committee. Weekly themes include:

Two emails that President Bill Boudreau received concerning the packages (the ones which were assembled at our October General Membership Meeting) we sent to our troops:
"I Just wanted to drop you a line and thank you and the VVA Plymouth for the package you sent. We
always appreciate letters, packages and words of encouragement from Great Americans like yourself.
We are very fortunate to enjoy the support of veterans such as yourself and it is especially
touching knowing that often you did not have the same support when you came home from Vietnam. I
am heartened that most Americans, even those against the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, are now
able to separate their dislike for the wars with their support for the troops. I believe in our
mission in Iraq, but make no mistake about it - every last one of us here would rather be home
with our families. To tell you a bit about myself: I am an U.S. Army Major (Infantry and proud of
it) who had been in the Inactive Reserves for the last eight years. Last December I received
orders in the mail that I was needed in Iraq. I was activated in January at Fort Benning and have
been in Baghdad since early March. I am on 400 day orders and should be stateside in January. I
work in downtown Baghdad for the Multi-National Security Transition Command. Our mission is to
help build the Iraqi Army and Police. My section is working to help develop the Iraqi Police
Force. We are fortunate to work with a number of civilian police advisors. I can tell you that
most of the people our unit lost have been police advisors. Most of the police advisors are former
chiefs of police who put their ass on the line everyday to mentor and train the Iraqi Police.
Americans should be told of their story. March and April were especially hard here in the IZ. We
often had multiple rocket attacks daily. Sleeping through the night without running to the shelter
was the exception. Unfortunately, in April a rocket went through the roof of our gym and killed a
COL and a MAJ. Both were U.S. Army Reservists that were activated."

"Hello Sir My name is SSgt Bo Gray and I am currently stationed in Southwest Asia in support of
Operation Enduring Freedom. I am an Air Force Security Force Member. We received a care package
from you chapter today and I would just like to say thank you. All the young troops really
appreciated everything (the snacks did not stand a chance). Well once again thank you and thank
you for your service my Uncle and Grandfather both served in Vietnam. Once again thanks so much
its nice to know we are not forgotten."
SSgt. Bo Gray USAF/379 SFS Southwest Asia.
Darrell Bazman reported our 2008 Car Show was a huge success. The 2008 car show was finally put to rest on October 16th when Bob Paul, Bob Dew, and myself took all 90 boxes to the Post Office to send off to the troops. The cost of all the items and shipping was paid for by the Car Show itself. We had a good year I would say. It takes about 9-12 days for all the boxes to get to the Iraq/Afgan area. Also, at this time I would like to thank everyone, whether you worked or supported the show for making this project a great success. It's the people of this Chapter that make this Chapter such a great one to belong to. You should be very proud of yourselves. We need ideas for whom should benefit from the 2009 show so bring them up at the next general membership meetings. Again, THANK YOU ALL FOR THE HELP!! Check out our Flyer or our Web Page Take a look at Hotrod Hotline Web Site which has a slide show of many of the cars from our Car Show.

Gentlemen, this should be a blast event. See Flyer. The proceeds all go to good Veterans help organizations to help them keep up their work, one of which is our Operation Never Forgotten (www.operationneverforgotten.org). If you like Rock & Roll, this will be fun. I attended one they had last year on a smaller scale. The music was very good and many folks dressed in period clothes. I would like your help in advertising and spreading the word ofÊthis for us, if you would/could. Thank you in advance. John Kinzinger

Joy Road Pick-Up was on Saturday morning, October 24. Check out the Photo. Rich Whipple Cell: 734-751-2992
On Saturday morning, August 15, Chapter 528 completed its 33rd Joy Road Pick-up, on a beautiful morning. This was our second stab at cleaning up Joy Road after a rain out on July 25.
The attendance was good, and we consolidated the Wayne County provided orange trash bags, and ended up only using six bags! The road looked like it had been picked up a few weeks before which allows us to complete the 2-1/2 mile stretch in a little over an hour. As you view the picture of our troops, you will see eleven of us bad boys assembled under the Wayne County Adopt-A-Road sign on the eastbound side of Joy, just east of Canton Center Road. After a rousing speech, Sergeant Whipple had the troops all pumped up to police Joy Road. You can see the look on our faces, that we meant business. Joy Road didnÕt stand a chance against these troops! They were frothing at the mouth to get at that road.
Those in attendance from left to right in the picture were: Wade "Rottweiler" Rothoff, Sergeant Whip, Forrest "all world" Manley, Marcel "Kawasaki bike man" Loosbrock, Bob "Sky Pilot" Humphrey, Ron "Emporer" King, Mike "donÕt bicker" Dicker, Bill "Alfalfa" Hayes, Jim "Diggin' Retirement" Hodgson, Don "Reunion Man" Dignan, and taking the picture, Karen "Foxy Grandma" Whipple. A hearty breakfast awaited us at the Canton Coney Island. Anyone who has participated in the road crew will agree that there are way too many cigarette butts on the road side. For you that smoke, we would all encourage you to not throw your cigarettes out on the roadside, let alone dumping your ashtray as well. Thank you!!

The VVA National Convention met this year in Louisville, Kentucky. The attending Delegates of
Chapter 528 were: Darrell Bazman, Bill Boudreau, Tom Brown, and Ron King. Chapter
528 members Gary Estermyer and John Riling attended as Representatives from the
State VVA Council of Michigan. Norma Demerly also attended as our AVVA Delegate. Dennis
Bielskis attended for VVA Chapter 142 (Monroe) and Moe Swope helped John Riling with
product sales. Dale Luebke was able to come and make Dog Tags for many Vietnam Veterans.
Everyone had lots of fun but it was a very busy and informative week. Unfortunately, Chapter 528
did not win any of the four awards we entered.
We met and talked to Pat Sajak, Jon Voight, Linda West, John Phelps (Vietnam Navy Veteran
who served in the Gulf of Tonkin and the father of Lance Corporal Chance Phelps). We also
met and talked with Lt. Colonel (retired) Michael Strobi who volunteered to escort the
remains of Chance Philips back to his hometown in Wyoming. HBO made a movie of Lt. Colonel
Strobi's book/diary about bringing Chance back. It's called "Taking Chance" and it stars Kevin
Bacon. The HBO movie has been nominated for 10 Emmy Awards. All delegates were able to watch the
movie and after its conclusion received a free DVD. Lt. Colonel Strobi brought his young son with
him. Bill Boudreau and I noticed his son was wearing a Derek Jeter shirt so we gave the boy
a Michigan Pin and told him that Derek Jeter went to The University of Michigan.
John Phelps, Chance's father, came up to Michigan Council Product Sales and Ron King
and my wife Cheryl waited on him. After Ron figured out who John Phelps was, he informed all the
workers (many of our own Delegates) that Chance's father wanted some merchandise. Naturally, we
gave Mr. Phelps the pins and patches he wanted - free of charge. John Riling, Bill Boudreau,
Norma Demerly, Ken Diegel, Ron King, Darrell Bazman, and myself talked Mr. Phelps into
becoming an Honorary Member of Chapter 528. Michigan State Council paid his VVA dues for three
years. John Phelps accepted to become a member of our Chapter - #192!
Each of our Chapter Delegates attended three separate meetings as well as attending our Region 5
Caucuses. The different Committee Hearings were: Agent Orange/Dioxin, POW/MIA, PTSD and Substance
Abuse, Veterans Benefits, Veterans Incarcerated, ETBO, Membership Affairs, Public Affairs, Health
Care, Women Veterans, Homeless Veterans, Minority Affairs, Government Affairs, and Constitution
Committee. I attended the Veterans Benefits Committee, Public Affairs Committee, and Government
Affairs Committee. At the Region 5 Caucus we were able to meet and question the 14 candidates who
were running for the National Board of Directors. The results of the Election: John Rowan,
President; Jack Devine, Vice President; Barry Hagge, Secretary; and Larry Frazee, Treasurer. The
new National Board of Directors are: Marsha Four, Bill Meeks, Patrick Welch, Dan Stenvoid, John
Margowski, Thomas Burke, Jerry Yamamoto, Sandy Wilson, Pat Bessigano, and Richard Delong.
During the Opening Ceremony Delegates were entertained by recording artist Michelle DellaFave
and Actress Lindsay Bloom (Dingalings). Retired U.S. Army Lt. Gen. Russel L. Honore
delivered the Keynote Speech. Heather French Henry, a native of Maysville, Kentucky, who
has been an active veterans' advocate since winning the Miss America crown in 2000, took part in
the Saturday afternoon autographing and book-signing session. The daughter of a disabled Vietnam
veteran, Heather French Henry followed her father into the halls of VA hospitals for treatments,
experienced his night terrors, and stood by his side as he recovered from severe post-war
emotional trauma.
During the Saturday Banquet the VVA honored Pat Sajak, who received the Excellence in the
Arts Award. In 1968, Pat joined the U.S. Army, and was sent to Vietnam. After a few months as a
finance clerk, he was transferred into Armed Forces Radio and given the morning show on AFVN in
Saigon where he yelled, "Good Morning, Vietnam!" for a year and a half. He finished his
military career at the Pentagon in 1970. Acclaimed Hollywood actor Jon Voight also spoke
during the Convention and at the Banquet. Mr. Voight won an Academy Award for his portrayal of a
paraplegic Vietnam veteran in the 1978 film "Coming Home" and went on to appear in dozens of films
and TV shows. His breakthrough film came in 1969 when he appeared in the critically and popularly
acclaimed movie Midnight Cowboy. The film won the Best Picture of the Year Oscar and Voight and
co-star Dustin Hoffman were nominated as Best Actor. On the Convention Floor Jon expressed his
regrets at being caught up with the hysteria that swept our nation at the end of the 60's and into
the 70's: "How sad I feel that our war heroes of Vietnam were not given a heroes welcome back
then, and their suffering was unimaginable. So many American lives lost in vain, and no one hailed
those that returned. Can we blame them for their bitterness? Our country turned against them." Mr.
Voight was truly upset as he apologized for his mistakes. At the Banquet, I was able to go up to
Mr. Voight and thank him for his honesty and told him that his sincere apology was one of the
bravest things I've ever experienced. He thank me! Jon Voight was also honored by the VVA because
of his work to get a National Day of Recognition for Vietnam Veterans. Mr. Voight helped
convince the U.S. Congress to set aside March 28 to honor the Vietnam Vets. The House of
Representatives and the Senate voted to designate March 30th (March 28 in 2010 - Sunday) to be
Vietnam Veteran's Day. Here are the front and back sides of a pamphlet which was given to
all Delegates at our VVA National Convention in Louisville. Front Side. Back

July/August 2009.
At the Saturday Banquet we were entertained by the band called Wulfe which specialized in music of
the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s. Everyone had a very enjoyable night. I would like to thank the Chapter
for electing me as one of your Delegates.
Tom Brown
Being chosen to represent our chapter as a delegate to the national convention was an honor for
me. Being chosen to attend the convention with you guys was truly an honor - you guys are awesome!
The convention was exciting and packed full of activities, programs, and general good times.
Indeed, it was an eye-opener to see the hundred of dedicated, no-nonsense veterans who are
genuinely concerned for their welfare, as well as the welfare of future veterans.
It was refreshing to see the huge numbers of Government agencies, offices, and personnel who are
diligently working to better Vietnam Veterans and their families lives. Also,it is encouraging to
know that our efforts as veterans are not being ignored, and that a lot of hard work is being
expended to decrease the amount of time that we have to wait to be compensated for injuries, etc.
The three committees that I attended, Agent Orange/Dioxin, Health Care, and Government Affairs
were extremely focused on finding positive, viable solutions to problems plaguing our veterans. I
also saw dedicated and professional people at all State and Government levels eager to streamline
veteran issues, and to stop the "lip service" and actually provide answers to concerns. Finally,
being a part of this massive convention and attending it with professional people like you is a
very humbling experience, and one I will never forget! Thank you for letting me be apart of it.
Ron King
Greetings All: As usual, I totally enjoyed myself in participating in the business of VVA at the
convention. It's always so refreshing to exchange ideas with other VVA family from around the
country. To be able to converse withÊ"3peat President John", National committee chairs, National
Directors and VVA staff is very informative. The hearings I attended were; PTSD & Substance
Abuse, Membership Affairs and Constitution. I heard Dr. Tom Berger and Dr. Tom C. Hall speak about
the progress in the committee. Gordie Lane spoke about a Veteran's Diversion Program he co-founded
with Peter Bronstad to better handle court cases involving veterans in Onondaga County, NY. The
membership hearing turned into an 1 1/2 hour Q&A session as no membership resolutions or
amendments were to be discussed. The constitution hearing was very helpful in reviewing the
amendments for consideration. At the Regional meeting I attended in Moline, IL in May proved that
those delegates were pretty much in agreement with the National committee. I also attended the
Legislative Affairs breakfast on Saturday morning with Bill and again it was very informative
hearing questions posed to the VVA leadership and the main speaker, House Committee Chairman Bob
Filner. Being one of the 657 delegates was again my pleasure and honor. I am grateful for the
financial assistance offered by the 528 membership. I believe all the 528 members who attended
will share their experiences and offer suggestions to make Plymouth-Canton Chapter 528 even better
and stronger. Reno in 2011 !! Gary Estermyer
Tuesday July 28th: Arrived aproximately 3:30 p.m. after approximately 5 1/2 hour drive. Tuesday
evening, after checking into my room, I went to the Convention Mall and delivered some requested
items to Michigan State Product Sales, and than registered at the Registration Area without any
problems. Went back to Product Sales and received my Michigan Council Kit, U.S. Marine 'T' shirt
Viet Vet., 10 trading Michigan Pins and my Vietnam Service ribbon lanyard for I.D. Tags. All the
Chapter Delegates hooked up and went to T.G.I.Fs for dinner downtown Louisville. With luck, I was
upgraded to a Suite at no extra charge due to Hotel over booking. So with this larger room I had
the Delegates meeting in my Suite where: Tom, Ron, Darrell, Gary and myself planned out the
various schedule of times to go to Seminars, following Opening Ceremonies Wednesday morning.
Wednesday July 29th: Convention Opening Ceremony at 9 a.m. Posting of the Colors, Welcoming to
Louisville, opening speeches by President John Rowan, and former Miss America Heather French,
whose father is a Viet-Vet and she has made it her work to help veterans and especially Disabled
Vets, making appearances all over the U.S.. Another main concern and recognition for this
Convention was for our Canadian Brothers. Approximately 30,000 Canadians fought for America in
American Branches of the Service. We received instructions on the working of the Convention,
Seminars, Proposals, and voted on the Convention Agenda. With all the preliminary items out of the
way, we were excused to go to lunch and then attend various seminars. The seminars we attended
were: Agent Orange, POW/MIA, PTSD, Veteran Benefits, ETBO, Membership Affairs, Public Affairs,
Health Care, Women Veterans, Homeless Veterans, Minority Affairs, Government Affairs, Constitution
Committee. The others Seminars we (the Chapter Delegates) divided up to attend, at our meeting
Tuesday Evening.
Thursday July 30th: Again had the Delegates return to the Main Convention Floor were the business
of Proposals and Amendments took place. See Note book PROPOSALS AND AMENDMENTS for details. Many
Proposals and Amendments were presented some with much discussion and a couple sent back to
Committee for re-wording. Things moved along so well that we were extended the agenda beyond the
12 noon lunch break to finish for the day - approximately 1:30 p.m.. VVA President Rowan dismissed
the Delegates for the Day. This is when Tom Brown and his wife and mine went to the LOUISVILLE
SLUGGER Factory/Museum down the street in Downtown Louisville. During the Regional Meeting at 7
p.m. in various rooms the Delegates got to hear from all those that running for the various
offices and what their stand on issues facing VVA today and what they will attempt to do if
elected.
Friday July 31st: Morning began with the Election of Officers and Board Members for the National
VVA. (this was all done by secret ballots in a room divided by Regions and run by the Kentucky
League of Women Voters). 9 a.m. the Convention Floor opened to work on the remaining Proposals and
Amendments that were sent back to Committee. Some proposals were with-drawn and some were
discussed and voted on. The results of the election were announced to all the Delegates and the
Delegates were excused for the day around 2:30 p.m. and excused from the Convention floor, because
of the response for the "Blue-Eyed Soul" ladies (formerly known as the "Gold Diggers" for Dean
Martin TV Show) who were scheduled for one of the smaller rooms had to change to the Convention
Floor to accommodate people wishing to attend. At 3 p.m. we had a private showing of the HBO Movie
"Taking Chance" with Kevin Bacon playing the Marine Col. escorting PFC Chance Phelps home for
burial in Wyoming who was KIA in Iraq in 2005. This was a very moving story and I did not feel
such a softy when everyone one around me had tears running down their cheeks. After the movie, we
were quite moved when the real Col. Michael Strobi USMC and his son after receiving a standing
ovation discussed a little of the making of the movie and his book. Kevin Bacon read the screen
play and begged to play the part. Everyone that attended the three screenings was given a DVD of
the movie.
Saturday August 1st: The day began with the "CLOSING CEREMONIES" and the tradition exchanging of
the VVA Flag to the Nevada Delegation as 2011 National VVA Convention will be in Reno, Nevada. We
then heard speeches by the Governor of Kentucky and a U.S. Senator in charge of VA Benefits, and a
Senator from Kentucky on the committee for Veteran Affairs. We heard good news and many promises.
An Increase in Veteran money and the Idea of the goal of NOT having any "Homeless Vets on any of
the streets, of any of Americas major cities." We were than given the final charges of the
"Louisville National VVA Convention" the closing of business and the ceremony of the "Retiring of
the Colors". The Convention was dismissed and the formal part of the Convention concluded.
Banquet - Saturday Evening: 6:30 p.m. there was a pre-reception outside the Convention Floor that
had been converted into a Banquet room. Our delegation cleans up pretty well and we were all set
for the festivities at 7 p.m when the doors opened. Unfortunately, we could not all sit at one
table but we were right next to each other at two tables. The Awards segment began with Awards to
Linda West, author of Beyond the Rice Paddies, Jon Voight, actor for is years
of work on screen but especially for his portrayal of a Returning Viet Vet in "COMING HOME", and I
might add now a very good friend and ally for Veterans. Pat Sajak - TV Game Host "Wheel of
Fortune" for his work in 1969 Vietnam with Armed Forces Radio. Mr Sajak gave several antidotes on
his Vietnam Years and we heard several of his recorded radio broadcasts from 1969. John Phelps,
artist and Vietnam Veteran who has done many Vietnam works of art and several sculptures. John is
also the real life father of Chance Phelps the young Marine from the Movie "Taking Chance". Also,
Lt Col. Mike Strobl - The Marine Colonel that lived, and wrote about and advised on the real life
story "Taking Chance" from HBO. Again, Bill Nelson - Vietnam Vet, & C.E.O. of HBO was recognized
for bringing us the story "Taking Chance" and giving us over 700 copies of the Video free to each
Delegate.
SUMMARY: The Delegates that the Chapter sent to this Convention Darrell Bazman, Ron King, Tom
Brown, were first timers, but they all handled themselves with enthusiasm, respect, and
determination to represent the Chapter and State Of Michigan in a great light. I know Gary
Estermyer (who always takes his Delegation jobs with the up most dedication) along with myself
were re-excited by the others which made this convention experience something that will live for a
long time. It was a pleasure to serve with these guys, socialize, eat, and work and listen. We got
to meet their families as well to get to know each other better. Thank-you Chapter 528 for making
me one of your Delegates. Bill Boudreau
My flight to Louisville was on a small Northwest/Delta plane which only had 2 seats on each side.
Arrived at 1:40 p.m. at the Louisville International Airport and proceeded to ground
transportation to get my shuttle over to the hotel which my pick up time was scheduled for 2 p.m.
After waiting until 2:30 p.m. and watching various other shuttle buses to other hotels come an go,
I called my shuttle service. They informed me that mine was on its way, and ten minutes later it
arrived. Arriving at the Galt house I preceded to check in an got my room. I went to my room to
check it out and then returned to the lobby to meet with other members an go to dinner. Several of
us from various chapters went out to dinner at the Spaghetti Factory. It was only 2 blocks away so
the walk gave us a chance to check out downtown Louisville. The food was good. Back at the hotel
sitting in the lobby talking and watching as more members from different chapters arrived. On
Tuesday helped at AVVA sales/silent auction table and at product sales table until registration
opened at noon. I had no problem getting my name badge an tickets for the AVVA luncheon and
banquet. Opening Ceremony was very impressive and the guest speaker General Honore was really
getting the crowds attention. I went to several seminars: By-Laws, Fund Raising, and Procedures. I
found out that any changes suggested for the By-Laws must be on proper form and submitted 120 days
before biannual meeting. There was discussion on chapters being incorporated even if there state
wasn't. Also, about stand alone chapters having to be incorporated. There was also discussion on
changing the one state one vote to one chapter one vote. It was also announced about AVVA being
approved if interested to become service officers and to talk to Nancy Switzer. Fund raising
needed to find out state laws if soliciting form required when contacting merchants. Ask for a
donation or suggest a donation not price. Some fund raising Ideas are bingo, juried craft show,
AVVA 50/50 raffle, bake sale, and place mats with sponsors on it. Also, cookbooks with receipes
from chapter members and also coffee an cookies at rest areas. At our AVVA luncheon we had a
former Miss America talk. Delegates had to decorate a hat for a contest. Madam Pres. Penny
Meinhardt won with her hat decorated with things from her region 5 states. Finally the banquet
went well, food and entertainment was great. It was a long week, alot of walking back an forth
between towers to seminars. Waiting on elevators! But it was for my first experience and an
interesting one.

POW MIA Report Allen Kerbyson, POW-MIA Chair There are still 1,740 U.S. personnel listed as

Irag and Afghanistan. Iraq: Spc Ahmed K. Altaie Oct 23 2006 and Afghanistan PFC Bowe Bergdahl Jul
19, 2009. August 02, 2009 remains were Identified as Navy Captain Michael Scott Speicher who was
shot down flying F/A-18 Hornet over weat-central Iraq on January 17th, 1991 during Operation
Desert Storm. Acting on information provided by an Iraqi citizen in early July, US Marines
stationed in Al Anbar Province went to a location in the desert which was believed to be the crash
site of Captain SpeicherÕs jet. The Iraqi citizen stated he knew of two Iraqi citizens who
recalled an American jet impacting the desert and the remains of the pilot being buried in the
desert. One of these Iraqi citizens stated that they were present when Captain Speicher was found
dead at the crash site by Bedouins and his remains buried. The Iraqi citizens led US Marines to
the site who searched the area. Remains were recovered over several days during the past week and
flown to Dover Air Force Base for scientific identification by the AFIPÕs Office of the Armed
Forces Medical Examiner. The recovered remains include bones and multiple skeletal fragments.
Positive identification was made by comparing Captain SpeicherÕs dental records with the jawbone
recovered at the site. The teeth are a match, both visually and radiographically. While dental
records have confirmed the remains to be those of Captain Speicher, the Armed Forces Institute of
Pathology DNA Lab in Rockville, Maryland is running DNA tests on the remains recovered in Iraq and
comparing them to DNA reference samples previously provided by family members. Results will take
approximately 24 hours. There are still 1,740 U.S. personnel listed as missing and unaccouted for
from Vietnam War, and 53 from Michigan. Two listed as captured from Irag and Afghanistan.

Since 1927, the State of Michigan provides appropriations to 11 Veteran Service Organizations to
provide the veterans of Michigan advocacy in retaining veteran benefits. On May 5, 2009, Governor
Granholm issued Executive Order 2009-22 mandating budget cuts for the current operating year. Due
to this Order, the Veteran Service Organizations were cut 25%, while other only received a 4-5%
cut. Why? This has had a severe impact on the ability of veterans in this State to obtain
assistance in obtaining benefits as many of these organizations have had to downsize staff and
operations. And There is current legislation pending, Senate Bill 250, which will drastically
change how veterans in the State will obtain assistance in receiving veteran benefits. Section 707
would effectively eliminate the state appropriations provided to the VSO and create a State
Veteran Affairs Office. In this time of economic difficulties and budget cuts, members of Congress
wish to create another Department and add another level of red-tape. Toby Beanblossom
At our May 11th General Membership Meeting, news about the state reducing financing to the
Veteran Service Organizations (V.S.O.) by 25 percent whereas all other departments are being cut
by only four to five percent. It has been recommended that members contact their state senator or state representative. It was also suggested to
call Richard LeBlanc at 888-737-5325. You could also contact Governor Granholm.

which is next to the railroad tracks. Chapter 310 organized this fundraiser at the Ypsilanti's
Depot Town. People listened to former Miss Michigan, Stacey Heisler-Mason, singing and playing her
violin, singer Kelly Trudell, and accordionist Tom Brown, playing for attendees at their tables.
There were nice auction items which helped raise more than $3,000.00. In addition to the auction,
50 percent of the total food bill and tips went to Chapter 310. 100 percent of all the proceeds
from the event will go to cover postage to send Care packages to our troops in Iraq and
Afghanistan. See a photo of Stacey and Tom

January 12th General Membership Meeting Vietnam Veteran John E. Craven II gave a ten minute
presentation on the D.O.V.E. Fund. The fund is a non-profit corporation founded by several Vietnam
veterans, Rotarians, and other concerned citizens in January 2000, in Toldedo, Ohio. Their goal is
to provide humanitarian and development assistance to areas in Vietnam; to promote communication,
education, and cultural exchanges that reflect the best qualities of both cultures; and to create
an environment brightened by hope and sustained peace. Take a look at their Dove Fund.org. You can also call John E. Craven II at

We had two special guests with us at the March 15, 2009 meeting; Leslie B. Wiggins, Associate
Director and Annette P. Walker, Chief Business Practices. They both work at the John D. Dingell VA
Medical Center in Detroit. Ms. Wiggins spoke first and gave a very informative overview of the VA
facility and touched on some of the many services that the VA offers, such as; benefits,
enrollment, medication copayment, acute and long-term care. Leslie also spoke about the means test
threshold for non service connected veterans. Veterans can go online, www.va.gov to access the
means test, enroll and check out all the current VA services. She had flyers, pamphlets and
booklets available for the delegates to take back to their chapter. Ms. Walker then addressed the
delegates about the relaxed Priority Group 8 enrollment restrictions. Previously denied applicants
may now be eligible for benefits following the new June 2009 provision, Public Law 110-329. All
veterans are encouraged to enroll for VA health care regardless of whether they plan to utilize
the VA system or not. By enrolling it helps the VA to identify the potential demand for services
and the necessary funding levels required for those numbers. The delegates asked the pair many
questions during the presentation which were answered professionally and candidly. We thanked Ms.
Wiggins and Ms. Walker for taking the time on a Sunday to come and speak to us. We appreciate the
work that they and others at the VA hospital provide in caring for veterans. Photo of Annette P. Walker, Chief Business Practices. Photo of Leslie B. Wiggins, Associate Director. Photo with both Annette and Leslie and Tom Meinhardt (L) & P'Nut Hicks

Check out this web site I found - Veteran Aid.Org that
goes into detail regarding Aid & Attendance (Special Pension). According to the information I
read, there is no need to be 100% service-connected determination to be eligible for this little
known benefit. Read the info very carefully and you will see the extent of the B.S. veterans will
have to go through to get this benefit. Lana Frank

"Preceded in valor only by the Medal of Honor and the Navy Cross, the Silver Star was established
by Act of Congress 9 July 1918 and is awarded for gallantry in action against an enemy of the
United States." The Silver Star and its companion book The Navy Cross were written to document the
heroism of the young men and women who have fought and continue to fight an enemy bent on
destroying freedom in the world. In the ongoing war against global terrorism, our servicemen and
women continue to carry out their missions with determination and great courage. They display a
dedication to their tasks and to each other that must be recognized and preserved for future
generations. These books provide that recognition for their gallantry. Join Dale Throneberry and
his guest; author Scott Baron this Saturday morning as they tell some of the stories about the
courageous men and women who have been awarded the Silver Star and the Navy Cross. Scott Baron, a
U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War and former law enforcement officer in California is also the

We are actively participating in helping our soldiers. At our June General Membership Meeting we
voted to begin a collection of items our Men and Women need overseas. Magazines/weekly tabloids
(hopefully no more than 2-3 or so weeks old) - any and all even remotely related to any sport,
guns, auto/motorcycle/truck, news, Entertainment, Time, Newsweek, Saturday Evening Post, ESPN,
People, pop music magazines, Popular Mechanics, US, Readers Digest, etc. Donate yours and get them
from relatives, friends, neighbors co-workers, your church, members of organizations you belong
to. Collect them every 2-3 weeks and mail. Anything that appeals to males ages17-35 NO Playboy's,
etc. If you or yours work at or with a junior high or high school, there may be a library or media
center that gets these type publications as well. Publications geared to Black and Spanish
speaking soldiers are always welcome. Crossword puzzle books, inexpensive shaving brushes used for
weapons cleaning-brushing sand off weapons are in high demand - they go through these often. Best
to have mailed to you, unwrap box and re-pack just brush with other items in your Priority Mail
box. Hard candies-good ones, not those cheapo leftover Halloween things - (go to Wal-Mart, Sam's
Club, Costco, etc. for bulk 1 pound bags) -Skittles, Jolly Ranchers, Life Savers, Wherthers
Butterscotch, Brachs Party Mix, peppermints, hard fruit flavored candy etc. Keep in mind it's now
well over 100 degrees daily and will go to over 120, so bubble gum, chocolate, etc, will not hold
up in the mail. Snacks like Beef Jerky, Trail mix, Slim Jims, bags of Cracker Jacks, Power bars,
protein bars, nutritional bars, granola bars, gum in blister packs (won't melt). Cookies: Avoid
sending any with nuts. Store bought bags may be best if you don't want to have fresh ones baked.
Use a larger USPS box sending PRIORITY MAIL for more room as packing requires using Popcorn or
bubble wrap and wadded newspapers take up space. THE MOST IMPORTANT ITEM is Mail, Mail and Mail -
You can write a note or card(s). If you are affiliated with a veterans group, school, scout
program, church group, civic organization, co-workers, your relatives and all their contacts,
etc., ask them to write a card with a message to our men and women. These men and women love cards
from kids and for some, as we recall mail call is a downer as they may not have a large support
group in the states, especially single soldiers. Handwritten and hand drawn cards from kids are
always a winner. Consider having mail given to you unsealed and review it for any possible
anti-war or suggestive line from a young females. From the 2-16 Family Support Group. "A soldier
in Iraq can't see your ribbon or the flag at your front door, but a letter they hold in their
hands to them means so much more". For handouts to school kids - The troops get great joy in
handing these out to kids, who have little school supplies. Many office supply stores, WalMart,
Staples, etc. have packs of 24-48-72 pencils and inexpensive sharpeners and erasers. If not they
are often at $1 stores. Smaller toiletry items - PX's run out quickly-travel or hotel size soap,
shampoo, foot powder, toothpaste and tooth brushes (check with you local dentist or dental
association) and nail clippers (can get small and larger sizes at the 99 cents and $1 stores).
SSG Christopher A. Wiacek, C Co 1-405th FOB Warrior TF Red Currahee APO AE 09354 will act
as our liaison for this project. The project will be an on-going event not just a one time deal.
Please help! & Thanks! Gary Pritchard
